Why do credit card companies keep increasing the max limit on my cards?

Is there a way to stop them from periodically increasing the max limit? I’m always scared that I might lose or someone might steal the card and charge it to the max. Is it even legal for the credit card companies to keep increasing the limits without my authorization? http://bit.ly/r3Abpl
