Is there any way to find out your credit score for free?

I know how to get a free credit report, but they say if you want to know your score you have to pay a fee. If I’m applying for a mortgage can I ask the lender what it is? I just got pre-approved and all he said was it was "excellent." http://bit.ly/qvxMx0
